Feiyu Pocket Gimbal

Is the Feiyu Pocket Gimbal something you should be considering for your video production kit? Let’s take a look.

Opening

When it comes to video content creation, a gimbal is an important tool in many situations. The good news is that you’ve got lots of options. That’s also the bad news. What to choose?

You can get gimbals for your smart phone, gimbals for action cameras and as we discuss in this video, mini gimbal-camera comnbinations.

If YouTube video numbers is any indicator, there are three leaders in this category. At the top of the list is the Osmo pocket from drone maker DJI. The products at second and third place are more closely matched. They are the Feiyu Pocket from Feyutech and the Fimi Palm. There are a couple of others out there including a new player from Moza called the Moin. It seems to have some new product bugs but Moza products from Gudsen are generally viewed favorably.

The big draw for the Feiyu and Fimi gimbal-cams is price. They are about $100 less expensive than the DJI pocket.

Since many of the reviews on this channel are focused on economically priced tools, we’re looking at the Feiyu Pocket to help you decide if this package will meet your needs.

Feiyu Pocket Overview

So in this overview we’ll take a look at the primary features and benefits of the Feiyu Pocket, do a quick tour and show some video I’ve taken with the device.

Let’s get started.

First, is the Pocket is tiny. At only 115 grams and less than 5 inches tall, the Pocket not only fits in your pocket but also very discrete as it fits almost entirely in your closed fist.

Next, it records in 4K 60 frames per second onto an SD card with up to 512 giga bites capacity.

It also has a 120 degree wide angle lens and a reasonably sized touch screen to control the camera. As with most gimbals, there is a smart phone app that allows camera control as well as some advanced gimbal features such as object tracking.

Last on this abbreviated list are time lapse functions that allow static time lapse, motion time lapse and hyper lapse videos to feed your creative side.

Feiyu Pocket Pros and Cons

All in all, I’m pleased with the Feiyu Pocket.

For me, not having an external mic capability is not a big deal as I often shoot with a separate audio track, anyway. A dedicated audio recorder such as my Tascam DR 5 or a Zoom brand recorder will have better preamps and audio circuitry than a small device like the Pocket. You can also use the recorder on your smartphone.

I really like the Pocket’s small size. I don’t like calling attention to myself when shooting video. For me being discrete is valuable. The fact that most of the typical gimbal features are included in this small package or with the available smart phone app makes this a small package powerhouse.

The video quality is quite nice and the pro features give more experienced photographers and videographers the control they can use to tune their shots to their needs.
